FAQ
Why should I see an orthodontist?
In addition to attending dental school, orthodontists receive several years of specialized training in orthodontics, a field of dentistry that focuses on the prevention and correction of misaligned teeth, bites, and jaws. Your orthodontist can provide you with a thorough assessment of your teeth and bite to design a custom treatment plan to meet your smile goals!
Why do I need straight teeth?
Straight teeth are not only a plus in terms of aesthetics and your confidence, but they have numerous health benefits, too. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, allow for clearer speech, easier digestion, healthier breathing, and can help you avoid jaw-related problems.
At what age should I take my child to an orthodontist?
The American Dental Association recommends children be seen by an orthodontist when their permanent teeth start coming in, which usually happens around the age of 7. This way, an orthodontist can monitor your child’s growth and development. By examining their teeth and jaw, our expert orthodontic team can determine if they would benefit from interceptive treatment.
What is interceptive treatment?
Interceptive treatment is an early, preventative treatment that is used for children as young as 7 to prevent some orthodontic problems from arising or progressing. Interceptive treatment involves using appliances, like braces or palette expanders, to facilitate eruption and the growth of adult teeth in an aligned manner that avoids overcrowding. However, in some cases, our orthodontists may recommend putting off treatment until a child has all of their adult teeth.
How do I tell if my child needs braces?
There are plenty of indicators that your child could potentially need braces, including having crooked, overlapped, or overly crowded teeth, losing baby teeth too soon, or having issues with their bite. Identifying these can be tough for parents, which is why we recommend orthodontic visits every six months as soon as your child turns 7 years old.
How do braces work?
Traditional braces include brackets and archwires tied together with elastics. The brackets are placed in such a manner that promotes proper alignment of your teeth as the archwires and elastics provide constant, gradual pressure. Other types of braces that we offer, such as Damon Braces and Insignia Customized Braces, utilize additional appliances to provide a more effective, discreet, and streamlined treatment. We also utilize AcceleDent Optima technologies which can speed up tooth movement and decrease a patient’s treatment by 25-40 percent.
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a great, cost-effective alternative to traditional braces. This orthodontic treatment encompasses wearing invisible aligners that are custom made for you. These aligners offer the same effect as braces while being completely discreet. Plus, since they are easily removable, they do not have the food restrictions associated with braces.
What is the cost of orthodontic treatment?
The cost of orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient—depending on their needs. However, treatment is often covered under dental insurance. At Carolina Braces, we believe that cost should not be a barrier to a healthy smile, so we are more than willing to discuss payment and financing options that work for you. Book a complimentary consultation today to explore these options with us!
Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?
No, you can receive orthodontic care at any age. We have several different kinds of treatments to fit your needs and smile goals.
